Costa Rica mulls new prison complex

Costa Rica is considering building a prison complex to house between 1,000 and 1,500 inmates, but a prospective location or capex were not disclosed.

“We carried out a revision with the architecture and heritage department. We have mapped all centers, and we know what refurbishment works must be done. Now, Costa Rica needs a new prison and we have the approval” of President Rodrigo Chaves, justice minister Gerald Campos was quoted as saying by Columbia news outlet.

Campos added that officials met with representatives of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration to secure funds for the prison, but the lender has not yet announced a decision.

Meanwhile, government efforts will focus on modernizing the prison system, Campos said.

The country has 21 prison facilities, according to outlet Semanario Universidad.
