Costa Rica opens Limón waterworks

Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado and Yamileth Astorga, CEO of national water and sewerage utility AyA, on Sunday opened new water infrastructure in Limón, a canton located in the province of the same name.

These included a new 10,000m3 water storage tank – the second largest in the country – which will serve to guarantee water supply in the city of Limón and surrounding communities through 2040, the Costa Rican government said in a release.

A second development was the rehabilitation of the Santa Rosa pumping station, which will now be able to pump up to 320l/s of water.

The two projects required combined investments of 2.27bn colones (US$3.7mn) and will benefit 29 sectors of the canton.

According to authorities, the works will serve to improve potable water distribution and guarantee that supplies will meet projected demand growth in the area.

Other projects AyA is carrying out in Limón include the second phase of a project to upgrade a local aqueduct to increase its capacity to supply the sectors of Moín, Liverpool and Búfalo.

This project entails the installation of around 75km of pipelines and the improvement of two storage tanks.
