Costa Rica opens road link to Moín container terminal

Costa Rica's Ruta 257 highway (pictured), an access road to the US$1bn container terminal under construction at Moín port in Limón province, opened Monday shortly after its completion.

Works required a US$71.9mn investment and were executed by Consorcio del Atlántico, a two-company consortium comprising Costa Rican firm Meco and Spain's Puentes y Calzadas.

Under a deal between the government and the terminal's concessionaire APM, the former agreed to develop the road and provide funding via the national road council (CONAVI), while APM offered in exchange to handle every container at a discounted price.

The new road comprises a 1.1km four-lane section that connects to Ruta 32 highway. It has bike lanes and a pedestrian bridge and two 1.6km elevated parallel two-lane viaducts, leading to the entrance of the container terminal.

Works began in February 2017. The original completion deadline had been set for February 2018.
