Costa Rica readying aqueduct expansion
Works to expand Costa Rica's Sardinal-El Coco-Ocotal aqueduct in Guanacaste province are set to begin in the next few days with the laying of pipelines.
The project will require an estimated investment of 1.73bn colones (US$3mn) to be provided by national water and sewage utility AyA, the Costa Rican government said in a statement.
In addition to the pipelines, the initiative also entails building a water storage tank and a well field.
The expanded aqueduct is expected to start operations during the second quarter of next year.
The objective is to supply certain areas in the town of El Sardinal, such as Zambranas, Los Chilolos, Obandito y Nancital-Bejuco.
This initiative is one of 54 projects under the Comprehensive Water Supply Program for Guanacaste (PIAAG), which includes other works such as the US$500mn water supply system for the mid-river basin of the Tempisque river and coastal communities (PAACUME).
A section of the aqueduct was already expanded back in 2011, with funds provided by a trust. However, AyA had to take over construction on the remaining section given the imminent risk of salinization facing the area's coastal wells.
