Costa Rica seen needing US$150mn a year to rebuild highways
Costa Rica’s public works and transport ministry (MOPT) reportedly estimates that at least 713km of highways need to be completely rebuilt due to their poor conditions.
Improvement works would take around eight years and demand an estimated investment of US$150mn per year, according to a report by news outlet Carreteras Pan-Americanas.
When applying a more demanding criteria for road quality, the figure rises to 3,200km of highways in bad conditions, the report said.
The government is due to file a request with the comptroller general’s office to start the highway works, according to Carreteras Pan-Americanas.
The national laboratory for structural materials (Lanamme) warned at the end of last year that there would be a significant cost increase if the government did not act swiftly to begin addressing the highways problem.
