Costa Rica spotlights progress on water projects
Costa Rica's water and sewage utility AyA is currently carrying out several projects worth a combined 800bn colones (US$1.4bn), according to executive president Yamileth Astorga.
Outlining the actions and projects that have been implemented during the first 100 days of the administration of President Carlos Alvarado, Astorga said that one of the main achievements is approval of law 9,590, which allows the use of water for human consumption in places named as natural heritage areas.
The law will benefit localities such as Coto Brus, Pococí, Cuajiniquil and Las Palmas de Osa, she said. Only authorized public operators will have the right to perform works in those areas, according to Astorga.
The official, who also served in the same position during the past administration, said the utility is implementing a comprehensive strategy for indigenous territories.
A potable water system has been built in La Casona in Coto Brus indigenous community and is expected to be opened this month following investment of 375mn colones.
Another 13 projects are currently being carried out in indigenous areas, she said.
