Costa Rica tackles renewable energy penetration

Bnamericas

Costa Rica's energy officials requested technical cooperation funds from the IDB to analyze measures that would increase renewable energy integration to the national grid.

State power company ICE's generation expansion plan recommends adding 495MW geothermal, 220MW wind and 1.1GW from other renewable energies. But increasing grid injection from these alternative sources requires studies to determine how much the system can handle.

Also from Costa Rica, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) granted a partial guarantee to Banco BAC San José to cover financing for a 63.4kWp solar project at a recreational center in San Antonio de Belén.

The US$135,000 guarantee is part of BCIE's renewable energy investment promotion program Areca for projects under 10MW and distributed generation. ICE subsidiary CNFL coordinated the interconnection of the self-supply project.

BNamericas will host its fourth LatAm Power Generation Summit in Santiago, Chile, on August 13-14. Click here to download the agenda.
