Costa Rica unveils airport investment for Limón province

Costa Rica's civil aviation authority (DGAC) will invest 6.75bn colones (US$11.8mn) through 2019 to carry out infrastructure improvements at different airports in Limón province, according to official information.

Some 1.5bn colones of that investment will be used to upgrade Limón international airport, the main terminal serving the province (pictured), and ensure that it complies with international requirements.

More specifically, the funds will be invested in the construction of new waiting halls and office buildings, as well as infrastructure to separate domestic from international passengers. They will also be used to install fire, rainwater and wastewater treatment systems.

The remaining 5.25bn colones will be invested in another three air terminals in different areas of the province. In Guápiles, 1.65bn colones will be used to build a 1,200m-long runway, as well as to install a fence around the local airfield.

Another 1.8bn colones will be used to expand the runway of Bataan's airfield and erect a fence and security checkpoint.

The remaining 1.8bn colones will be invested in the construction of a new passenger terminal at the Barra de Tortuguero airport, in the country's north Caribbean region. The funds will also serve to expand the existing aprons, as well as to install a runway lighting system.
