Country must look to waste-to-energy projects - minister

Bnamericas
Jamaica needs to look to waste-to-energy projects to combat the increasing cost of maintaining the country's landfills, said the minister of state at the science, technology, energy and mining ministry, Julian Robinson. Jamaicans generate an estimated 1.5kg/d per person of solid waste, of which 69% is organic, with 70% coming from households, according to a 2006 report from the national solid waste management authority (NSWMA). Landfills are approaching their maximum capacities, with the country's largest, Riverton, due to be full by 2014, government news service JIS reported the state minister as saying. The tons of solid waste generated annually by residential, commercial and institutional entities in the country should be used to generate energy, he said. "For every 1Mt of refuse processed [into energy] the need to use 1.67Mb of oil to generate that same amount of electricity is offset," said Robinson. Jamaicans are becoming increasingly aware of the value of waste and the need to protect the environment, with widespread collection of plastic bottles and recycling programs in schools. Johnson was speaking at the "Entrepreneurship: The Solid Waste Opportunity" seminar held in Kingston on March 29.
