Court fines for software piracy double in 2003

Bnamericas
Brazilian courts have fined software piracy criminals 7mn reais (US$2.38mn) this year to date, double the figure for all of 2002 , Brazilian paper Valor Economico reported. Courts were pressured to increase anti-piracy fines on software by an anti-piracy coalition formed between Brazilian software companies association Abes and international software association Business Software Alliance (BSA). The 7mn reais was split among offenders of 180 cases, according to Abes. Piracy costs the legal software market in Brazil 1bn reais annually, the local unit of the US' consulting firm IDC said in a report which was paid for by the BSA. Brazil has cut down on software piracy in recent years to 55% of the total market compared to 77% a few years ago, BSA vice president Bob Kruger was quoted as saying. Brazil is an bellwether in the Latin American market, he added: "What happens [in Brazil] influences the rest of the market."
