CSN capex tops US$85mn in first half

Brazilian flat steelmaker CSN (NYSE: SID) invested a total of US$85mn in the first half, the company said in its financial statement. The funds were invested in projects related to maintenance and technological upgrades at the Presidente Vargas Mill in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, it said. The amount does not include an addition of 514mn reais for the incorporation of pre-painted and galvanized products maker CSN-Parana, formerly Cisa, by the parent company in early March. CSN posted profits of 513mn reais (currently US$171mn) in the first half, compared with a 408mn real loss over the same period in 2002. Revenues climbed 48% to 3.17bn reais and gross income grew 86.5% to 1.56bn reais in the same comparison. Rio de Janeiro-based CSN has installed steelmaking capacity of 6Mt/y.
