Cuba launches mobile app for WiFi connectivity

Bnamericas

Cuba's state-owned telecommunications company Etecsa launched a mobile app to allow users with Android smartphones to safely connect to its network of public WiFi hotspots, the company said on its website.

Etecsa has brought internet access to millions of citizens of the Caribbean island. Last year it launched prepaid 3G connectivity services, obtaining nearly 2mn subscribers in 40 days, and more recently it has started trials for 4G networks in the country.

"The new app is designed to offer more safety to access Nauta accounts in public WiFi sites. It also informs users when they are not connecting directly to an Etecsa access point,” the company said in a statement.

One of the worst-rated countries in the region in terms of connectivity, Cuba has been making efforts to offer better internet and connect more users in remote areas.
