CVRD ups railcar order from Amsted-Maxion

Rio de Janeiro-based mining and logistics giant CVRD (NYSE: RIO) has increased an order to purchase railcars from Sao Paulo-state based rolling stock supplier Amsted-Maxion, the latter said in a statement to Sao Paulo's Bovespa stock exchange. CVRD will purchase a total of 2,878 railcars for 370mn reais (US$130mn), up from 1,667 for 200mn reais. The railcars are for the transport of iron ore and for general cargo and will be used by rail operators Vitoria-Minas (EFVM), Carajas (EFC) and FCA, a CVRD spokesperson told BNamericas. Deliveries will be made between January and December of 2004. Amsted-Maxion is a 50:50 joint-venture between Brazil's Iochpe-Maxion and US company Amsted Industries, whose other clients include Brazilian railroad concessionaires MRS Logistica and Ferronorte, as well as local steel companies Cosipa and CSN. CVRD is the largest diversified mining company in the Americas, with a market capitalization of some US$22.5bn.
