Data Insights: Latin America's US$253bn renewable energy portfolio

Renewable energy developers in Latin America and the Caribbean are pushing ahead with projects requiring more than US$253bn in combined investments, according to BNamericas data.

The portfolio, which does not include hydroelectric plants, comprises 8,005 projects in the early works stage with total expected capital expenditure of US$233bn, and 703 projects under construction worth US$20.9bn.

The database shows that there are currently 1,796 renewable energy projects in operation in the region following investments of US$113bn.

Brazil has the largest share of projects, including those that are in operation, with 8,091, followed by Chile (1,244), Colombia (308), Mexico (251) and Argentina (173).

São Paulo-headquartered firm Pacto Energia has the biggest portfolio with 177 developments, ahead of Serena (139), Voltalia (88) and PEC Energia (77).

According to BNamericas' forecast tool, 132 projects are expected to progress to another stage this quarter, while another 391 are seen advancing in the fourth quarter.

The tool predicts 175 stage changes in the first quarter of next year and an additional 145 in the second quarter of 2025.

The largest renewable energy project in BNamericas' database, by capex, is the H2 Magallanes complex being developed by TotalEnergies in southern Chile.

The US$15bn initiative comprises a green hydrogen production facility, an onshore wind complex, transmission lines, a desalination plant and port infrastructure.

Second on the list is Fortescue Future Industries' US$8.4bn Pampas project in Argentina's Río Negro province, which envisages a green hydrogen production facility with associated solar parks and wind farms.

It is followed by the US$8bn Gente Grande wind and green hydrogen project under development by TEG in Chile, the US$6.95bn Ceará green hydrogen hub in Brazil, the US$5bn HNH onshore wind and green ammonia complex in Chile and the US$4bn Payasandú eFuels development in Uruguay.
