In a scenario where artificial intelligence (AI) has been dominated by Silicon Valley giants, the emergence of DeepSeek, developed by a Chinese startup, not only challenges the technological status quo, but also promises to democratize access to AI for Brazilian companies of all sizes.
The tool, which quickly became one of the most downloaded apps in the United States, is gaining traction in Brazil. Working in a similar way to ChatGPT, DeepSeek offers a range of services, from general consultations to translations and complex problem-solving.
André Lay, head of consulting at Logithink , explains that what makes DeepSeek truly revolutionary is its alleged cost efficiency. While giants like OpenAI invested around US$100 million in training ChatGPT 4, DeepSeek is estimated to have been developed with an investment of just R$6 million.
This monumental difference in development costs has profound implications for the market. “China has taken a different approach, focusing on making the application consume less and less processing power, delivering results as good as or better than American solutions, with much lower energy consumption,” he says.
Impact in Brazil
For Brazilian companies, DeepSeek represents an unprecedented opportunity. The reduced cost makes cutting-edge technology accessible to small and medium-sized businesses. In addition, lower energy consumption means reduced operating costs, a key factor for companies.
Michel Novelo, head of AMS at Logithink , emphasizes that DeepSeek-V3 can be more accessible for companies looking for specialized solutions without paying for unnecessary features. “It is a technology that will undoubtedly democratize access to AI and solutions developed through AI in the Brazilian market,” he says.
IT giants crisis
André Lay predicts that this could be the first major crisis faced by North American IT giants. "Many applications that use ChatGPT's core as their main raw material may migrate to DeepSeek due to the lower cost to meet the same demand," he explains.
Despite DeepSeek's disruptive potential, Michel Novelo believes that there is room for all tools: "Each tool has its applicability, that is, they will complement each other. Each one will end up being more effective in a given process. There is room for all of them," he concludes.
Both agree that Brazilian companies now have the opportunity to embrace the AI revolution without the prohibitive barriers of cost and complexity that previously held them back.
