Deepwater stretch of Guyana gas-to-energy project’s duct ready

Offshore energy project and service provider Subsea 7 has completed the deepwater section of Guyana’s project to land natural gas onshore.

“This was our first project in Guyana and involved the fabrication and S-lay of 119km of rigid pipeline,” Subsea 7 chief executive John Evans said during the London-based company’s latest earnings call on Thursday.

The 12-inch duct included 9,608 pipe joints and was laid in water depths of up to 1,400m using the Seven Borealis vessel, which is now mobilizing to Saudi Arabia.

In 2022, Subsea 7 and Van Oord announced an award by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana for the 190km pipeline, with Van Oord responsible for a 75km nearshore stretch in water depths up to 28m. The entire offshore pipeline is due to be ready by year-end.

Gaico Construction and General Services and Sicim are responsible for the 25km onshore stretch.

The pipeline will transport gas from the Stabroek block and initially supply a 300MW power plant and a natural gas liquids facility, both expected online next year.

In its presentation, Subsea 7 highlighted prospects for tie-back projects in Guyana, and the installation and operation of subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) equipment and subsea production systems (SPS) for offshore block 58 in neighboring Suriname.
