Digital platform in the pipeline to boost LatAm electrification
IDB has placed technical cooperation in its portfolio of possible financing to advance rural electrification in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
The funds would help establish a digital georeferenced information platform to support universal access plans and investment in grid infrastructure, particularly for off-grid areas.
Identified target countries are Brazil, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Suriname.
“All countries have subscribed to the SDG goal of universal access by year 2030 but reaching the so-called ‘last mile’ is costly and adequate planning and public policies are required,” according to the development bank.
The lender forecasts that LAC could be the first developing region to achieve universal electricity access, highlighting that coverage in 2020 stood at an estimated 97.4%, or that 16.8mn people lacked service, the majority in rural areas.
