DirecTV expands broadband business in Argentina

Satellite television operator DirecTV is expanding in Argentina with the launch of its fiber optic service in Córdoba’s metropolitan area, including the municipalities of Córdoba, La Calera, Los Boulevares, Malvinas Argentinas and Argüello.

The service will be offered through local internet service provider Batcom, the company confirmed to BNamericas. It will be guaranteed by DirecTV, which will use its own brand and technical service.

“With new alliances, we will continue to expand coverage areas to bring connectivity to homes in Córdoba and the rest of Argentina,” said Mariano Peralta, FTTH alliances manager for DirecTV Latin America, in a press release.

DirecTV will offer broadband in Córdoba along with its streaming and television platform DGO, and the service is currently available to around 20,000 households in the area. 

In Buenos Aires, the company offers its broadband service in partnership with neutral fiber network players like Metrotel, having coverage of more than 700,000 households. 

Vrio, which is controlled by Argentine holding company Grupo Werthein and operates DirecTV Latinamerica and Brazilian provider Sky, has fiber broadband service agreements in other countries with operators such as FiBrasil, V.tal, I-Systems, American Tower, Velonet, OnNet and WIN, among others.

The company also has an agreement with Project Kuiper, the satellite internet service that Amazon is expecting to launch in Latin America next year.
