Dominican Rep approves PPAs in call for new gas-fired power supply
Dominican Republic power regulator SIE has greenlighted contracts awarded in the international public tender to supply up to 800MW from new natural gas-fired plants.
The power purchase agreements to be signed are with distributors EdeSur, EdeNorte and EdeEste, and Energía 2000, which won with an offer of 400MW.
The Consejo Unificado de las Empresas Distribuidoras de Electricidad (CUED), which represents the distributors, launched the call (EDES-LPI-NG-04-2023) in November. The names of other participants have not been disclosed.
CUED highlighted growing demand and a potential shortfall during summer in relation to previous years, among other factors.
The contracts, available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen, will run for 180 months and supply must begin within 36 months of signing.
Energía 2000 is developing the 414MW Manzanillo Power Land project, construction of which is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of next year, a company official told BNamericas previously.
In its medium-term operations report for August-July 2025, power grid coordinator OC forecasts that gas-fired plants are expected to account for 42% of generation.
The balance of production would come from coal 31%, fuel oil 9%, solar 8%, wind 4.67%, hydro 4.21% and biomass 0.91%.
