Dominican Rep, Barrick agree US$100mn clean-up of historic mining pollution

The Dominican Republic and Barrick Pueblo Viejo agreed a US$100mn plan to clean up historic mining pollution around the Pueblo Viejo mine.

Barrick Pueblo Viejo, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, will provide US$75mn for the 10-year project, with the government providing the remaining US$25mn.

The plan was forged with the energy and mines ministry in accordance with a special mining rights agreement which allows Barrick to operate the Sánchez Ramírez province mine.

MAIN AIMS

The clean-up is aimed at tackling pollution from the former Rosario Dominicana operations at Pueblo Viejo, which ceased in 1999.

Priorities include closure of the Mejita tailings dam, remediation of the Hondo Norte and Hondo Sur zones, Cumba pit and local rivers, and the relocation of soils contaminated with mercury.

The project was originally planned to begin in 2009 but was delayed to allow time for discussions and studies.

Pueblo Viejo, a 60:40 JV between Barrick and Goldcorp, is Central America's biggest gold producer. Barrick's share of production was 172,000oz in Q1 at all-in sustaining costs of US$496/oz.
