The Dominican Republic will need US$7bn for 49 investment projects – including ones in infrastructure – that are listed in the government’s 2024 budget bill, local media report.

The projects, according to daily El Caribe, oblige the government to seek financing from international and development banks.

The initiatives include construction of the border wall with Haiti, which is overseen by the defense ministry and will require US$240mn.

They also include 13 water pipelines and another three water infrastructure projects like canals and dams, which will require a total of US$2.3bn, the report said.

The largest of the water projects is an aqueduct in the eastern region overseen by water and sewage agency INAPA.

In the transportation sector there are three big projects requiring US$1.1bn: the Santiago monorail, the works related to line 2-C of the Santo Domingo metro, and the national plan for connectivity and road infrastructure transformation – overseen by the public works ministry.

Other projects involve the overhaul of power distribution lines, as well as educational and social programs.
