Dominican Republic raises oversight of renewable energy dispatch

Dominican Republic power regulator SIE approved a procedure for temporary limits to renewable energy generation to protect the grid.

In a resolution, the watchdog said a grid disturbance in January led the energy control center (CCE) to apply measures and maneuvers to reestablish the grid’s normal operation, including the gradual reduction of renewable production.

This led the SIE, CCE and grid coordinator OC to establish a mechanism for the gradual reduction of renewable generation to maintain grid stability.

The process included the participation of wholesale power market participants, according to the regulator, which highlights the government’s plan for renewables to account for 25% of electricity production by 2030.

The resolution and new procedure are available in the Documents box in the top-right corner.

In a related development, the Caribbean country’s energy commission (CNE) signed a definitive concession contract with Akuopowersol for the 65MW El Guincho solar project.

The plant would be built in San Antonio de Guerra, Santo Domingo province, and boast 20.7MW and 82.8MWh of energy storage.
