Dominican Republic set to launch construction of El Granero del Sur airport in 1Q23

The Dominican Republic is set to begin works on El Granero del Sur domestic airport in the west of the country in the first quarter of next year.

This airport will be located at kilometer 11 of the highway between San Juan de la Maguana and Las Matas de Farfán, and is expected to contribute to agricultural trade in the region.

President Luis Abinader announced the plans for the airport during a meeting of the San Juan development council, talking to more than 500 local farmers.

“The airport design is ready. It was prepared by the airport department with the 100mn-peso [US$1.8mn] savings that the institution has. We will begin construction during the first quarter [of 2023],” he said.

According to the head of the airport department, Víctor Pichardo, the first stage of the works will include the construction of a runway, airport terminal, a terminal for agricultural products, quarters for the air force and a secondary platform. +

This stage is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Pichardo added that the construction of the perimeter barrier will start in November this year.

“We already have teams working on the area to carry out all studies for this airport. It’s real: San Juan will have an airport,” he said.
