Dominican Republic’s Bávaro airport project stuck in limbo
The construction of the Dominican Republic’s Bávaro international airport remains mired in controversy and halted, perhaps definitely.
The country's supreme court has rejected an appeal from Grupo Abrisa – the company that holds the project's construction contract – against a previous administrative court ruling that banned construction in the resort of Bávaro in Higüey municipality.
After the latest legal obstacle, the project initially approved by the public works ministry seems to have hit a dead end, although Abrisa president Abraham Hazoury, denied the supreme court ruling has meant the cancellation of the project and that the July 2020 decree issued by former president Danilo Medina approving the project still stands.
The project began to run into legal troubles once President Luis Abinader came into office in August 2020.
The US$200mn project will serve the Punta Cana-Bávaro tourist resorts.
