Double-digit output dip for Peru’s principal crude producer

Oil production in Peru last month averaged 38,579b/d compared to 42,177b/d in July, according to the latest numbers from hydrocarbons licensing authority Perupetro.

The drop can be attributed to a lower contribution from the country’s top oil producer, PetroTal-operated block 95, which saw output fall nearly 28% to 14,363b/d.

Previous company guidance highlighted expected low river conditions this quarter and next that impacts the transport of crude on barges.

August’s other top producers were blocks X (7,702b/d) and Z-69 (4,353b/d), which are operated by OIG and Petroperú, respectively.

Nevertheless, January-August production averaged 40,763b/d versus 38,700b/d for all 2023.

Natural gas production also slid in August, down 3% from July to 39.3Mm3/d, the bulk of which came from blocks 88 (25.8Mm3/d), 56 (6.28Mm3/d) and 57 (5.35Mm3/d).

At end-July, the energy and mines ministry declared an emergency in the supply of natural gas transported through pipelines until mid-August due to maintenance at the Malvinas and Chiquintirca gas processing plants.

Gas output in the first eight months of 2024 averaged 38.7Mm3/d compared to 40.1Mm3/d in all last year.
