Ecuador establishes the First Permanent Advisory Committee on Electric Energy
The following is a machine translation of a Ministry of Energy and Mines release
On October 24, 2024, the first meeting of the Permanent Advisory Committee on Electric Energy, made up of representatives from the public and private sectors, was held in Quito. The organization, which was created under a Ministerial Agreement, will provide technical-legal advice on the work carried out by the National Government to address the electrical emergency and strengthen the Ecuadorian Energy System.
The Minister of Energy and Mines (acting), Inés Manzano, highlighted the importance of the establishment of this Committee “in which the detailed technical parameters will be established to strengthen the system.” The purpose is to draw up a strategic roadmap aimed at strengthening the governance of the sector.
In this regard, the Secretary of State stressed the importance of articulating and considering the contributions of the private sector: "they are essential to build problem-solving mechanisms for the comprehensive benefit of all Ecuadorians."
Representatives from the Ecuadorian Energy Chamber, the Quito Chamber of Commerce, the Ecuadorian Business Committee, the Association of Ecuadorian Lubricant Producers, the Ecuadorian Association of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers participated in the first meeting. These private sector entities will be incorporated as permanent members.
The duties of the Permanent Advisory Committee include analysing the situation of the national electricity sector, providing support to the state institutions involved, updating or reforming legal bodies related to the energy sector, among others.
This body will meet once a month and may issue reports, studies, analyses and proposals to provide technical, economic or legal support. Recommendations will be approved by consensus at previously convened meetings.
