Ecuador extends Telefónica concession for a 6th time
Ecuador's ICT regulator, Arcotel, has approved the sixth extension of Telefónica's concession as part of ongoing spectrum renewal negotiations.
Arcotel restarted talks with Telefónica and Claro in 2024, after having suspended negotiations in 2023.
Both concessions were granted in 2008 and expired in 2023.
Negotiations between the two private operators and the government began in 2021, but no agreement has been reached.
On Friday, Arcotel defined a May 15 deadline for the Telefónica talks. If both parties fail again to reach an agreement, the concession can be extended for a seventh time, according to a resolution.
Telefónica will pay up to US$2mn monthly under a provisional measure for the rights to the title and the use of spectrum.
A decision about Claro’s concession hasn’t been made public.
