Ecuador inks contract to finish US$280mn light rail

Ecuador's public works minister Paul Granda (pictured) and Cuenca mayor Marcelo Cabrera signed a contract to finish construction of a 20km light rail line for the city.

The US$280mn project has been stalled since October 2016.

The consortium in charge of finishing the project, ACTN, was awarded a US$48mn contract in September. The group consists of French firms Alstom, CIM and NGE Contracting. The new concessionaire has 10 months to complete the rail line, a press release from the Cuenca municipality says.

Originally, the project was awarded to consortium Cuatro Ríos Cuenca, but it abandoned the works last year and had its contract terminated by the Cuenca municipality in January.

The parts of the project that remain to be finished include three bridges, the workshop for the trains, station platforms and track signals.

The line will have 27 stations and is expected to transport 120,000 passengers per day.
