Ecuador signs contracts to generate 120 MW of additional energy
The following is a machine translation of a Ministry of Energy and Mines release
The Ministry of Energy and Mines, through ELECAUSTRO, announces the signing of two contracts to incorporate 120 MW of energy into the National Interconnected System through emerging, floating and terrestrial solutions. This is equivalent to providing electricity to 607,000 homes.
In November, ELECAUSTRO received a delegation from the Ministry of Energy to manage these incorporations, in response to the drought situation that has affected the country. The processes were carried out in an agile, transparent manner and in strict compliance with national public procurement regulations.
On December 22, 2024, the contract was signed for the “RENTAL, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF A FLOATING THERMOELECTRIC GENERATION SOLUTION ON DEMAND”, with a capacity of 100 MW.
This contract is for the rental of a vessel owned by KARPOWERSHIP ASIA COMPANY PTE LTD. Payment for the energy provided by this vessel will be made on demand; that is, payment is made only for the energy produced.
Likewise, in response to the delegation from the Ministry of Energy, after carrying out the due process, on December 20 the contract was signed for the “RENTAL OF A TERRESTRIAL THERMOELECTRIC GENERATION SOLUTION WITH A CAPACITY OF UP TO 20 MW”, with the PRIME ENERGY GROUP Consortium. The terrestrial generation will be located at the El Descanso Thermoelectric Power Plant, owned by ELECAUSTRO, and commercial operation is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
With the implementation of these Power Plants, ELECAUSTRO provides solid energy to meet the country's demand in this time of crisis. In this regard, Christian Piedra Lazo, manager of ELECAUSTRO, indicated that the main objective is to contribute, from all companies and sectors, to improve the energy supply in the country, thereby avoiding greater impacts on citizens. With these actions, ELECAUSTRO also contributes to the expansion of the energy matrix by providing thermoelectric generation with greater availability.
In addition to these emerging contracts, ELECAUSTRO is executing its expansion plan for renewable energy projects such as the 20 MW photovoltaic project and the second stage of the 40 MW Huascachaca Wind Farm, among others.
The National Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines, continues to expand the generation park, to ensure the supply of energy for Ecuadorians.
