Ecuador to promote PPPs for US$1.5bn in new hydropower

Ecuador’s government plans to offer public-private partnerships (PPPs) for 10 new hydroelectric projects which envision a combined 640MW and investment of US$1.52bn.

Authorities unveiled the projects after an update by the energy and mines ministry and state power corporation Celec to hydropower studies carried out 40 years ago.

The proposed plants range from 20MW to 150MW and will be incorporated into the master electrification plan.

Hydropower currently accounts for nearly 60% of the country’s installed power generation capacity of 8,786MW.
