Ecuador’s Telconet advances with construction of CSN-1 submarine cable
Two years after signing the project’s contract, Telconet reported progress with its signature submarine cable through the construction of some of the landing stations for Carnival Submarine Networks – 1 (CSN-1).
Other stations are currently in permitting and licensing stage, the Ecuadoran telecoms group said in a press release.
It also said that the cable is being integrated with optical repeaters in France, at the Calais factory of ASN, who is responsible for the project.
When ready, CSN-1 will run 4,500km from Ecuador to Florida's west coast, with landing points in Panama and Colombia.
In addition to the two stretches planned, the project could also see landing points in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico.
In March 2022, Guayaquil-based Telconet signed a supply contract with Nokia’s ASN for the construction of the cable. The system will rely on ASN's SDM Open-Cable technology solutions.
Telconet said that some of its executives will visit the Calais plant in June to check the latest advances.
The project has also relied on the services of DRG Undersea Consulting for implementation support.
The cable is now expected to be ready for service in the first quarter of 2026. Initially, the project was due for 2025.
FOOTPRINT
Telconet operates a fiber network spanning over 100,000km, with more than 3,500 MPLS nodes, in addition to datacenters and artificial intelligence infrastructure, in Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and Guatemala.
In addition to CSN-1, Telconet is one of the owners of the PAN-AM cable, the first submarine cable of Ecuador, and the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS).
The firm’s Cable Andino is the owner of PCCS together with Telxius, C&W and Aruba's SETAR. Telconet and DRG also worked together during the construction of PCCS.
