EIA submitted for US$500mn Chile copper project

Construction of a US$500mn copper mining project in northern Chile’s Antofagasta region is expected to start in March 2026, according to an environmental impact assessment submitted by Minera Cielo Azul.

The project, dubbed Óxidos Marimaca, entails an open pit mine near the city of Mejillones and an SX-EW plant to produce copper cathodes, the EIA says.

Other works include installing a desalination plant to obtain water for both potable and industrial uses.

The mine is expected to operate for 21 years, processing 12Mt/y of ore to produce 50,000t/y of copper cathodes.

The full EIA can be read here (in Spanish).
