El Salvador assigns 30MHz in AWS band to Movistar

El Salvador's telecom regulator Siget confirmed the allocation of 30MHz of spectrum in the extended AWS band to Telefónica Móviles, which operates as Movistar in the country.

The 20-year concession was granted in February, but the official publication was only made on Wednesday on Siget's website.

The concession consists of three portions of 5+5MHz (2,155-2,160MHz, 2,160-2,165MHz and 2,165-2,170MHz) with nationwide coverage.

The assignment was made based on a request from Movistar in December. Siget did not disclose how much the company is paying for the concession.

Siget recently accepted a concession request submitted by Telefónica Móviles for 75 pairs of SHF radio spectrum frequencies for point-to-point links in fixed services.

In addition to Movistar, Tigo, Claro and Digicel operate in El Salvador.

At the end of March, the country had 11.5mn mobile phone lines and 96% of the population had coverage, according to the latest information available.
