El Salvador fine-tuning gas framework

Complementary natural gas regulations are expected to be in place this year in El Salvador, the fuels director at the country's national energy council CNE, Rocío Aquino, told BNamericas.

The IDB has helped draft the new regulations which cover transport, service stations and distribution, said Aquino. The country's natural gas law was enacted in May 2008.

Initially, gas will be used for power generation at Energía del Pacifico's plant which is expected to go online in 2021, highlighted the official.

She added that a survey also revealed interest from industry to incorporate gas into their processes, and that a number of companies are looking to import gas overland.

In the long term, potential offtakers could include vehicles and residences, said Aquino.

The full interview with the CNE official is available here.
