El Salvador readies roadworks for US$80mn

El Salvador's public works and transport ministry (MOP) and road conservation fund Fovial are set to spend US$83.7mn on rights-of-way and maintenance of 7,220km of highways.

The investment “will generate 18,000 direct and indirect jobs for our economy. Fifty-six tenders have been published for which 383 offers from interested companies have been received,” public works and transport minister Romeo Rodríguez was quoted as saying by news site Carreteras Pan-Americanas.

Of the total offers, 120 related to maintenance of paved and 118 to non-paved roads, while 145 were for maintenance of rights-of-way. Works include patching, pavement recycling, installation of signaling and risk prevention measures.

Bidding is underway for rebuilding the Ilobasco-Sensuntepeque highway and projects in the east. Contracts will be awarded this month and works should start in January.
