El Salvador to kick off water treatment plant construction

El Salvador’s aqueducts and sewage authority (Anda) will soon kick off construction of a water treatment plant at the Ilopango lake.

Anda president Rubén Alemán said the construction contract had been awarded to a Chinese company, without revealing its name.

The US$40mn project is part of a cooperation agreement with China, local daily La Prensa Gráfica reported Alemán as saying.

In October last year when El Salvador signed the agreement with China, Alemán had estimated that construction would take between two and three years but the projection has now been changed to five years, according to the report.

The plant will generate 300l/s to supply water to more than 250,000 inhabitants in the municipalities of Soyapango, San Martín, Ilopango, San Marcos, Santo Tomás, Santiago Texacuangos, Olocuilta, and San Francisco Chinameca. The water will not be extracted directly from the lake but from the surrounding areas, said Alemán.
