El Zapotillo to continue despite protests, ministry says

Bnamericas
Mexico's interior ministry (Segob) has confirmed that work will continue on Jalisco state's El Zapotillo reservoir project, national water authority Conagua said in a release. Conagua is holding mediations between local authorities and opponents to the dam project to address protests held throughout Jalisco last month. The protesters said an injunction protects the towns of Temacapulín and Acasico, which will be flooded to make way for the new reservoir. The talks are due to wrap up Friday (June 3). The El Zapotillo reservoir and El Zapotillo-León water transfer system will supply an estimated 2.5mn people in Jalisco state capital Guadalajara and León city in Guanajuato state. Spanish construction firm FCC, in association with compatriot Grupo Hermes and Mexican firm La Peninsular, is building the 2.1bn-peso (US$176mn) dam and reservoir. A tender is currently underway for the water transfer system.
