Acciona to build new power transmission infrastructure in Mexico for 21mn euros
Press Release by
Acciona has been selected by Mexico's Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to build a power line from the Topolobampo III combined cycle power plant, involving four separate design and construction jobs - two transmission lines and two substations - in the states of Sinaloa and Sonora.
The two power lines, at voltages of 400 kV and 230 kV, will measure 276 kilometres in total, and the two substations will operate at those voltages.
This turnkey project, adjudicated for 24.5 million USD (21 million euros), is headed by ACCIONA Industrial with its Mexican subsidiaries.
The work comprises engineering, equipment supply for the lines and substations, civil engineering, electromechanical assembly, and commissioning. It is scheduled to be completed in March 2019.
Two years ago, ACCIONA was selected by the CFE to design and build a 117-kilometre 400 kV electrical grid to carry electricity from the Empalme II combined cycle power plant to the states of Sonora and Sinaloa. That 90 million USD project was the first power line construction project assigned to ACCIONA in Mexico by the CFE. That project will be completed in the coming months; the company has also completed the Baja California Sur V thermal power plant.
Forty years of experience
ACCIONA opened its first offices in Mexico, belonging to the Infrastructure division, in 1978. The country is now one of ACCIONA's main markets, along with Spain, and the company's various business areas are working on a number of major projects there.
ACCIONA participated in developing landmark infrastructure projects such as the Atotonilco wastewater treatment plant, the Jala-Puerto Vallarta highway and the first General Hospital for the Mexican Social Security Institute in Nogales. Earlier this year, a consortium of which ACCIONA is a member was awarded the contract to build the passenger terminal at Mexico City's new airport.
ACCIONA is also a leading renewable energy provider in Mexico, with an installed capacity of 557MW in proprietary wind power facilities and 252MW in wind power facilities built for customers. In addition, the Company was awarded contracts in two auctions held last year under the Mexican Energy Reform, for a total of 395MW, which will come on stream in two phases, in 2018 and 2019.
ACCIONA's real estate business is also active in Mexico, with landmark projects in Mexico City and Acapulco. The Acciona Microenergy Foundation is undertaking rural electrification projects in villages with under 100 inhabitants, having already benefited over 30,000 people in the state of Oaxaca.
