Eletronet advances its international strategy with the launch of a PoP in New York

São Paulo, December 4, 2023 – Eletronet – provider of IP transit services and long-distance high-speed circuits via fiber optic network in OPGW – opens this December its first Point of Presence (PoP) in North America, in New York City, this being the 167th PoP in its network. The second PoP, in Miami, is scheduled for 2024 and will consolidate a journey of growth and reaffirm the company as an active player in the international traffic and connectivity market.
The Points of Presence in the United States will form the “Americas Ring” with connection points with the structure already present in Brazil. The ring will comprise the PoPs of São Paulo, New York, Miami and Fortaleza. The customer will be even more advantaged, as with its own PoP in the United States, Eletronet will now be able to access available content in its entirety, with objective gains in terms of latency, connection stability, signal quality and lower cost.
“As we establish this PoP in New York, our status completely changes when we talk in terms of internet presence. Eletronet is now able to negotiate connectivity and access to content that currently depends on an intermediary. Furthermore, the economic condition of the business will be optimized with our control of the Americas Ring, enabling a more efficient connection and cost reduction”, points out Célio Mello, Manager of Products and Strategic Projects at Eletronet.
Eletronet already operated in the United States and Europe through partners, in the remote peering format. The decision for its own PoP is the natural step in a journey that began in 2017, when the company decided to enter the IP Transit segment, evolving the business historically focused on transport and data transmission services. In 2018, Full IP Eletronet was launched, as an evolutionary layer of services provided by the company, which benefited from the national network of its own PoPs, and which added to a strong movement to establish a presence at Internet Exchange Points (PIX or IX) in addition to using international partners to serve the global instance of internet content.
With the network properly installed – Eletronet operates in 27 IXs, 19 national and 8 international, and 167 PoPs interconnected in its own fiber optic network. “We consider that we are at the ideal time for the first step towards international expansion, due to our maturity, expertise, volume of traffic and customers”, explains Mello.
Option for North American and international customers
The PoPs in New York and Miami will also serve international customers – content and internet providers, telecom or data center operators, Cloud operators and CDNs – who are interested in traffic and connectivity in Brazil.
“We are ready to serve those who already hire an international submarine cable operator and arrive at concentration points in Brazil. In a country of continental dimensions like ours, arriving in Fortaleza or São Paulo is only part of the equation. Eletronet can deliver this portion of national connectivity with all our differentiated value proposition, based on a service with a high level of quality and availability, based on our OPGW cable network, on the modernized DWDM network with a single manufacturer, associated with a service that makes all the difference for this client who wants to have an expanded presence, but is not used to Brazil”, explains Célio Mello.
Continuous journey
The opening of Points of Presence in New York and Miami is not the final stage of Eletronet's international expansion, which will continue working to expand on other continents and within Latin America itself. In this sense, the company has been accessing the North American and European market since 2018 with Full IP Eletronet, participating in prominent events in the segment to meet and be known by players, in a movement that culminated in participation as an exhibitor at ITW (International Telecommunications Week), in May this year, in the capital of the United States, Washington DC
New services and products will also be incorporated into this expansion effort – in fact, two are already on the radar: International Remote Peering, for clients operating in Brazil and who want to have a presence in international markets such as the USA; and IP Premium, which is an IP transit with access to differentiated content and transit, only accessible from PoP outside Brazil.
Now, Eletronet is on par with other operators that operate in the Brazilian market and that have positioned themselves differently by having direct international access. This is no longer a differentiator in relation to Eletronet.
