São Paulo, July 25, 2023 – Eletronet, a provider of IP transit services and long-distance high-speed circuits over a fiber optic network over OPGW, with more than 17,000 km throughout Brazil, announces the activation of the Belo Horizonte IX, expanding the range of operations and product offerings in the region. With the expansion of the network, Eletronet is present in 27 Interconnection Points throughout Brazil and the world, consolidating its leadership among Brazilian operators.

The IX, also known as a Traffic Exchange Point (PTT) or Internet Exchange Point (PIX), is a fundamental component of the Internet infrastructure, through which Independent Autonomous Systems, including access providers (ISPs), Internet content providers, content distribution networks (CDNs), academic, financial and government institutions, among other types of networks, can interconnect directly with the main purpose of exchanging Internet traffic with each other, allowing latency reduction, quality improvement and web optimization.

“Usually, a provider, to access the content that its customers are looking for, needs to establish direct links with centers of content concentration, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Fortaleza, directly or by contracting data links, however, with the IX these connections are no longer necessary, making the direct data exchange more efficient, raising security levels”, explains Célio Mello, Eletronet’s product manager.

The activation of the IX in Belo Horizonte will mainly serve providers in the region. However, providers from all over Brazil who are interested in exchanging traffic and accessing content present on the IX will also benefit from the connection. In this way, Eletronet customers throughout Brazil come out ahead with differentiated connectivity through peering with participants at the Belo Horizonte traffic exchange point.

Eletronet will offer the IP transit modalities of its portfolio, such as Full IP and IP Brasil, in addition to allowing the customer to connect directly to the IX, either physically through a Golden Jumper or through a logical connection via VLAN, using the Eletronet connection to the PIX.

The Belo Horizonte PIX is a very relevant IX in Brazil, as it has 102 participants and more than 30 Gbps of traffic. In this scenario, Eletronet enters to add even more, bringing new participants and with the mission of making traffic grow even more, as it did in the other points with which it has recently connected.

Eletronet is already present in Belo Horizonte with 3 POPs in the metropolitan region (Barreiro, Taquaril and Itambé), in addition to having another 29 POPs distributed in the state of Minas Gerais.

Expansion of participation in IXs

Eletronet currently operates in 27 IXs, 19 of which are national (with five of its own and participation in another 14, directly connected to the central IX) and 08 international. The operator also has 166 POPs interconnected in its own fiber optic network.

“Eletronet is one of the Brazilian operators with the greatest connection to PIXs, whether national or international. We believe that IX is a way of regionalizing traffic, which improves the quality of internet connections, allows optimization of investments by providers and contributes to digital inclusion”, guarantees Mello.

Benefits

One of the main benefits of the IX is the increased fluidity of traffic over the network, since the contents present in the various PIXs are now available without the need to navigate great distances and establish multiple connections. “Traffic exchange points allow optimized and direct access to game sites around the world, to sites of various government entities throughout Brazil, such as Detrans, Federal Revenue, as well as access to banks, videos, streaming, etc.”, completes Mello.

Full Routing

As a differential, Eletronet makes available, in Full IP mode, all routes (full routing) for customers to access without restriction, in any of the IXs where they are present. They now have the same advantages as those located in central regions with abundant access, as in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil.

Who benefits?

In addition to Eletronet customers, who now have a direct connection with all providers and customers present at the exchange points, all participants present at the IXs benefit, as they add high availability of the network and Eletronet services - without the need to establish new physical connections with distant points in their region.

Another beneficiary of the Eletronet connection is IX.Br itself, since providers located in the region no longer need to go to a distant center to access content and, therefore, strengthens the decentralization of traffic through the appreciation of the regional community.
