Embratel activates Ka band in its biggest satellite

Brazilian satellite company Embratel Star One, part of the América Móvil group, has activated the Ka band on its IPSAT broadband service provided from the Star One D1 satellite.

Star One D1 is the biggest satellite ever launched by the company, which operates the largest satellite constellation in Latin America.

D1 was launched in December 2016 at costs of over US$400mn. It occupies the 84 West orbital position and is equipped with C band (28 transponders), Ku (24 transponders) and Ka Bands (24 transponders).

In a statement, Embratel said that the offer in Ka Band allows companies of various sizes and segments from locations with little or no telecommunications infrastructure to have access to plans with 25Mbps or 20Mbps download speeds.

Star One D1 covers Brazil, Mexico and other parts of South and Central America.
