Embratel Star One picks providers for new satellite
Brazilian satellite company Embratel Star One, part of the América Móvil group, has announced the providers and developers of its new satellite, the Star One D2, expected to be launched by the end of 2019.
California-based SSL (Space Systems Loral) will be responsible for building the equipment, while French firm Arianespace will be in charge of putting it into orbit on one of its rockets.
The values and terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
With 11 satellites, Embratel Star One has the the largest fleet of satellites in Latin America and D2 will be its 12th.
Star One D2 will operate in three bands: the Ka band for cell phone backhaul, and the C and Ku bands to meet data, video and internet demands from corporate clients and government, as well as to boost existing cellular backhaul networks.
Additionally, the X band will be set aside for use by the Brazilian defense ministry.
The satellite will provide coverage for Brazil and parts of South and Central America, including Mexico.
