Emerson enhances control system software for seamless data integration and increased operational performance

Emerson, a global technology and software leader, further expands the DeltaV™ automation platform with the DeltaV Release 15 Feature Pack 2 update for its distributed control system (DCS). This feature pack release enables users to easily migrate to a DeltaV DCS from other third-party control systems, expands support for Ethernet networks of data-intensive devices, and reduces the complexity of state-based control implementations.
In their quest to achieve elusive performance improvements to meet ever-increasing efficiency and sustainability goals, plants are turning to technologies that modernize control without undue engineering risk, added expense and downtime. The latest version of the DeltaV control system maintains the usual periodicity between major releases, allowing users to more quickly take advantage of the project savings and operational efficiencies offered by new control system software features.
“DeltaV Release 15 Feature Pack 2 provides users with new functionality, capabilities and enhancements to further expand seamless data and I/O integration, as well as applications to more easily modernize their operations, increase connectivity and collaboration, and achieve operational excellence,” said Claudio Fayad, vice president of Technology for Emerson’s Process Systems and Solutions business.
Today’s plants need to take advantage of modern, digital technologies that streamline operations and increase sustainability. However, a common obstacle to control system modernization is the high cost and staff required for I/O migration. Enabling users to replace outdated control systems with modern DeltaV software and controllers without modifying existing I/O infrastructure, DeltaV IO.Connect now supports multiple third-party control systems.
Plants can now immediately migrate to a modern DeltaV control system from common third-party systems. This allows them to gain the benefits of modern control instantly and migrate their I/O infrastructure gradually, on their own schedule to minimize downtime and risks.
The popularity of high-speed, data-intensive Ethernet-based networks for devices continues to grow in the automation sector. This trend will be driven by the advanced physical layer, which will increase the range of applications in hybrid and process industries.
With this latest release, the DeltaV control system not only supports a greater variety of data types, but also has enhanced diagnostic capabilities for the wide range of supported Ethernet-based communication protocols, including PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, and Modbus TCP. These enhancements build on DeltaV automation’s solid foundation for exchanging the increasing volume and variety of data from next-generation field device networks.
State-based control is a key enabler for plants looking to implement autonomous and semi-autonomous operations to reduce downtime and safety risks. With DeltaV Release 15 Feature Pack 2, design and operations teams now have more options to define the execution of state-based control sequences when operations require a change in logic.
This optional behavior enables safe and reliable operations, while increasing flexibility and maintainability of state-based logic. To increase operator situational awareness, the DeltaV Live watch area feature has also been enhanced to remain active when navigating between screens.
