Emerson's new wireless transmitter provides unprecedented flexibility for controlling and monitoring field assets

Emerson today announced the launch of the Rosemount™ 802 Wireless Multi-Discrete Input/Output Transmitter featuring eight discrete input/output (I/O) channels, each configurable as either an input or an output. WirelessHART® capability allows the transmitter to connect to a wireless gateway, which in turn can link to a host (such as a control system or asset management system) via a wired connection. This allows the host to remotely monitor and control assets over a WirelessHART network.

The new Rosemount 802 transmitter and its predecessor, the Rosemount 702 Wireless Dual Input/Output Discrete Transmitter, are the only WirelessHART-enabled remote I/O transmitters available today, supporting Emerson’s vision of a Boundless Automation™ smart field with flexible configuration and ease of deployment through wireless connectivity.

The wireless capabilities of the new Rosemount 802 dramatically reduce the costs associated with monitoring and controlling field-installed assets such as motors, valves and pumps, which traditionally require time-consuming field visits by technicians or a wired connection. The new Rosemount 802 minimizes these costs and improves safety by removing the field technician from hazardous areas, while maintaining the discrete levels of input and output control enabled by the host system.

The new Rosemount 802 operates similarly to the Rosemount 702 transmitters, but with eight I/O channels instead of two, each configurable as a discrete input or output. For installations where multiple assets are located in an area and each must be monitored and/or controlled, the 802 transmitter is a more cost-effective solution than the Rosemount 702.

Power options include 10-30 volt direct current line power or an Emerson SmartPower™ module. The latter option requires no wiring, offers up to eight years of maintenance-free operation, and can be quickly and easily replaced in the field.

The Rosemount 802 transmitter is certified to the following safety parameters: ATEX Zone 2 Intrinsically Safe, Division 2, Non-Incendive and Intrinsically Safe, Zone 2 and USA, Division 2, Non-Incendive and Intrinsically Safe, Zone 2 for Canada, and IECEx Intrinsically Safe, Zone 2. The device enclosure is rated to NEMA® 4X and IP66.
