Energy demand reaches record 3,500 megawatts

This MEM release was published using machine translation.
On Monday night, a new record for demand for electrical energy was recorded in the country, reaching 3,500 megawatts (MW), reported the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM). This figure represents an increase of 10.23% compared to 2022.
The head of the MEM, Antonio Almonte, indicated that the peak of demand occurred at 9:00 pm and noted that, from 2022 to 2023, demand has grown by 325 MW. This is due to the economic, social and productive development that the nation is experiencing, he stated. In addition, he recalled two other occasions in which demand has exceeded historical levels, on September 28, 2021 with 3,161 MW and on September 16, 2022 with 3,175 MW.
Likewise, he highlighted that the Government has adopted measures to guarantee the supply of energy to all sectors, both residential, industrial and commercial. Among the actions carried out are the incorporation into the national electrical system of 368 MW from fossil fuel sources and 1,812 MW from renewable energy projects, the result of 34 purchase contracts signed during the last three years, of which eleven have already been signed. They are in commercial operation.
Likewise, a plan for the construction of power plants has been developed and implemented, in order to provide the local system with sufficient capacity to satisfy energy demand with a projection to the future and maintain a reserve in case of a contingency.
Minister Almonte reiterated the commitment of the Government of President Luis Abinader to the sustainable development of the country and to the transition towards a cleaner, diversified and competitive energy matrix.
