Energy environmental filings on the uptick in Guyana

Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received new applications for infrastructure to support the build-out of the energy sector.

The filings include work for the oil sector which in recent days received a boost after the government approved the US$9bn Payara project as part of offshore block Stabroek’s development.

RAMPS Logistics applied to build an oilfield distribution center for the transport and storage of hazardous materials and Guyana Shore Base plans to store and transport chemicals to produce oil and gas, both at East Bank Demerara.

For its part, Guyana Power & Light (GPL) applied to install a 43MW plant at Garden of Eden, also in East Bank Demerara.

Earlier this year, GPL and Wärtsilä signed an EPC contract for the Garden of Eden project.

The EPA has determined that the three projects will not significantly impact the environment and therefore do not require an environmental impact assessment, but appeals may be filed.

In recent weeks, applications were filed with the EPA by Oilfield Waste Management Services to build and operate a waste treatment plant; by Guyana Logistics and Support Services to build and operate a chemical storage and warehouse facility and laydown yard; by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana for an office complex; by Tristar (Versailles shorebase) to build a wharf; by Isika Shore Base to build a quay wall/wharf as part of an integrated oil and gas shore base and navigation channel; by JOP Property to build an oilfield super center; and by Baker Hughes to operate an oilfield super center.
