Energy storage project enters Puerto Rico procurement pipeline
Luma Energy, which operates Puerto Rico’s power distribution and transmission grid, is completing the detailed scope of work for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project.
In an update sent to the island’s energy regulator, PREB, Luma said it expects to submit the work to the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency and the US Federal Emergency Management Agency this month.
The proposed locations for the four 25MW BESSs for a 38kV interconnection are Aguadilla, Barceloneta, Manatí and San Juan.
Luma expects to issue a request for proposals to carry out the project in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, with construction estimated to begin in April 2026 and commissioning in May 2027.
