ENGIE builds the largest Battery Energy Storage System in Peru

This Engie Energía Perú release was published using machine translation.
ENGIE Energía Perú, one of the largest electricity generation companies in the country, presented the Battery Energy Storage System -CHILCA BESS- which entered into commercial operation on July 27.
The Chilca-BESS system has an installed power of 26.5 MW, making it the largest of its type in Peru. It is located in the facilities of the ChilcaUno Thermoelectric Power Plant to provide the mandatory Primary Frequency Regulation (RPF)* service required by the electrical system. Thanks to this modern storage system, the ChilcaUno plant will be able to allocate an additional capacity of 50 MW of efficient energy to the country, previously reserved for frequency regulation.
It has 84 lithium-ion battery cabinets; 7 modules made up of inverters and electrical transformers; and a medium voltage electrical room that includes the control and protection system. Its implementation required a total investment of 18.3 million dollars.
“With this new investment in the country, we are contributing with a balanced and flexible energy mix. “Energy storage with batteries, such as Chilca-BESS, does not increase CO2 emissions and constitutes one of the most flexible and reliable technologies to support the development of renewable energy in Peru, and thereby accelerate the energy transition safely.” said El Mehdi Ben Maalla, CEO of ENGIE Energía Perú and Country Manager Peru.
ENGIE seeks to be a player present in the entire value chain of energy generation in Peru. In June of this year, the Punta Lomitas Wind Power Plant (260 MW) was put into commercial operation, contributing significantly to the development of renewable energy in Peru. Now, Chilca-BESS is launching, adding to its existing flexible (thermoelectric) assets to guarantee security of supply with state-of-the-art technology and accelerate the country's energy transition. These assets will ensure grid stability when renewable energy sources are not available by offering different flexibility services to the system.
