Equinix plans to build US$130mn datacenter in Chile
US company Equinix filed an environmental impact assessment for construction of the ST5 unit, the company's fifth Chilean datacenter.
Planned to be built in Santiago's Pudahuel district, ST5 will demand US$130mn and an area for 24,420m2. Construction is planned to start in May 2025, with the first stage ending in April 2027.
The complex comprises two data rooms, an office module and vehicle parking. It will have 16 emergency generator sets of 3,500kVA and one of 900kVA for the offices in the event of a power failure, plus a 337,500l oil tank to provide autonomy for 30 and eight hours at full load.

Equinix has 85 datacenters in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the US and Canada, according to its website.
In 2022, the company acquired four Entel datacenters in Chile and one in Peru for US$705mn.
The four units in Santiago – ST1, ST2, ST3, ST4 – have total capacity of 7.5MW and an estimated area of 7,536m2.
In 2023, the company approved US$46mn for the expansion of ST2 in Ciudad de Los Valles, Pudahuel. The expansion is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2025.
Equinix recently acquired land to build a datacenter in Mexico City, while activating a data structure, known as cloud on-ramp, in Bogotá.
The company is also expanding its second Mexican datacenter (MX2) and the SP4 unit in São Paulo. A second site is expected to be launched in Monterrey, a third in Rio de Janeiro and SP6 in São Paulo.
