Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is opening this month, in Indaiatuba-SP, its new innovation center called 5G Open Innovation Center — an open innovation environment driven by the company's already consolidated performance in Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) with cutting-edge technological development and a solid collaborative ecosystem.
The objective, according to Karam Takieddine, Head of Innovation at Ericsson for the Southern Cone of Latin America, is to foster the collaboration of companies, universities and startups to create reference ecosystems, and to be a business development tool to enable more advanced use cases and monetization for companies, the public sector and consumers powered by the 5G innovation platform.
“Our idea with the new innovation center is to provide an open environment to expand cooperation between technology, industrial and integrator partners so that we can jointly develop new technology use cases based on the 5G infrastructure available in the laboratory. Our differential lies precisely in our long-standing local expertise in research and development, which already works with cutting-edge technology and has a very solid collaboration ecosystem,” says Takieddine.
Today, Ericsson has partnerships with six Brazilian universities: Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), University of São Paulo (USP). And with four Science and Technology Institutes: National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), Venturus, FACENS and FITec.
The new innovation center is equipped with Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) assets, a 3D design platform, cloud servers, next-generation graphics cards (GPUs), 3D robotics simulators AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicle) and AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), drone kit, advanced cameras and IoT sensors. In addition, the space will have three different networks: a private 5G network in the 3.7-3.8 GHz band, a public 5G network in the 3.5 GHz band and the new 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology, a versatile, fast-deployable and effective solution for providing broadband connectivity in urban and rural areas where fixed broadband infrastructure is limited.
For Edvaldo Santos, Ericsson's Vice President of R&D&I for the Southern Cone of Latin America, the impact of 5G on new technologies is enormous. To this end, the new center will have a modern space for Proofs of Concept (PoCs) and demonstrations that combine AI (Artificial Intelligence), immersive technologies, robotics, Cloud and 5G, designed by an innovation ecosystem.
“We currently have a wide range of innovations, such as the use of AR for Industry 4.0 applications with robots controlled by finger movements instead of joysticks; Artificial Intelligence for self-managing networks; vehicular communication for safer transportation; computer vision for accurate and real-time decision-making, among others. And we are already working on what comes after 5G – in the very near future, we can expect initiatives such as Digital Twins and digital and programmable representations of real-world phenomena,” he concludes.
Recognized globally as the main driver of 5G standardization, Ericsson is repeating the success story of previous generations. With its R&D&I center of excellence in the city of Indaiatuba, the company has strengthened its position in Brazil over the past 52 years as a leader in research and development in the telecommunications sector, actively contributing to technological advancement and the construction of an increasingly connected society.
